A common malady- Anaemia

Anaemia is an important nutritional problem affecting all segments of the population in general and children, women and pregnant women in particular.

In the latter groups prevelance of anaemia may be as high as 60% to 70%. Anaemia in India, is essentially due to iron deficiency, although, in children and pregnant women, folate deficiency also plays a part. Although, our diets contain fairly good amount of iron, its absorption is very poor (2-3%). Amaemia can be aggravated by environmental factors which lead to blood lodd eg. hookworm infestation.

How to Prevent it?

  1. Consumption of iron folate tablets by children and pregnant women.
  2. Improve iron balance in the diet.
